2000 and Whatever – Bulgaria

We may not get to see our 2020 favourites take to the stage, but that doesn’t mean we can’t reminisce on our Eurovision favourites. This series is aimed to discover the team’s favourite entries from the 21st century, from 2001 to 2019.

In collaboration with ESCDaily, we will be reviewing some of their 21st Century favourites, while over on their site, you will find their reviews of our favourites!

Anita Reviews Dennis’ 21st Century Favourite

Kristian Kostov – Beautiful Mess | 2nd place, 615 points (Final)

Bulgaria has a handful of songs I really enjoy, and not just from their golden years more recently. It’s very clear that Beautiful Mess is one of the best, and results-wise, the best song that Bulgaria has sent to Eurovision.

This is such a beautiful ballad that was contemporary and well performed by Kristian, who despite his age, was one of the best singers of the night. Bulgaria backed their young artist with an incredible stage show that really created the perfect atmosphere for the song. All together, this all just works with such ease, and had Portugal not pulled it out of the bag, Bulgaria would have scored their first Eurovision win.

Joshua Reviews Brandon’s 21st Century Favourite

Kristian Kostov – Beautiful Mess | 2nd place, 615 points (Final)

Personally, ‘Beautiful Mess’ is not one of my favourite Eurovision entries. It is very clear to me however why it did so well in 2017. It was distinctly modern, with slick staging contributing to a seamless performance. Kostov displayed such professionalism and performed with ease, particularly impressive at such a young age. He achieved Bulgaria’s best ever result of second place, and I believe it’s only a matter of time before they win. Their 2018 and 2020 entries show them to be on the right track…
